Succeeding with Mitsubishi Electric

Following successful completion of their winter test programme the BMW Sauber F1 Team is well-prepared for the 2006 Formula 1 season. Last year Sauber finished eighth overall in the championship rankings. BMW Sauber F1 Team is determined to catch up with the leading Formula 1 teams as fast as possible. The staff in Munich and Hinwil have been working very hard over the last few months, and partner Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V. has been making a valuable contribution to ensure that the ambitious target is achieved quickly.

Mitsubishi Electric supplies the BMW Sauber F1 Team with wire-cut and die-sinking EDM systems and is also supporting the team with its extensive expertise in electrical discharge machining. In the ultra-competitive world of Formula 1 flexibility, speed and precision are essential for the systems used to create and shape components. Erich Rüegg, the works manager in Hinwil, is delighted with the performance of the Mitsubishi machines. "Our designers need a lot of freedom to shape their parts," he says, "and this is particularly important in the design phase. These high-tech machines from Mitsubishi Electric open up virtually unlimited possibilities for us." Toshio Moro, head of Mitsubishi's Mechatronics EDM division, is also very satisfied with the results of the partnership. "Bringing your expertise into a Formula 1 team with championship potential is one of the biggest challenges there is," he explains. "I am delighted at how both partners are benefiting from the collaboration."

The many changes in the Formula 1 regulations have made flexibility and speed in the production process even more important in the 2006 season. The engines now have 8 cylinders instead of 10, which meant a complete redesign - the resulting new BMW P86, as the new engine is officially called, is shorter than its 10-cylinder predecessor. Along with the team's outstanding infrastructure and the skilled and highly-motivated staff, Mitsubishi Electric's wire-cut and die-sinking EDM machines are making a valuable contribution to the success of BMW Sauber F1 Team.
