HK Technologies Ltd
The patented design of the Erix automatic back spotfacing chamfer tools delivers reliable performance and considerable cost and time savings for diverse applications, including camera components, engine turbines and machine tools. Available in the UK from sole agent HK Technologies, the tools consist of a spindle with a single cutter or wing. This folds into a recess in the spindle, so that the tool can pass through a bore in the work piece after which the direction of rotation is reversed and the wing extends to allow the back of the bore to be machined. With just one moving part the tool is extremely reliable and Erix claims that it will usually cut processing time by 60 to 70 % (90% has been achieved in some cases) compared with conventional back spotfacing chamfering methods with the resultant substantial savings in costs. Smaller sizes of tools have an HSS wing with an integrated cutting surface for larger tools the wing carries an ISO insert. In use the tool is rotated anti clockwise at the recommended speed (which varies depending on the diameter) with rapid feed until the wing is a few millimetres from the work piece. Feed rate is then reduced to 0.2mm/revolution until the wing has folded into the spindle recess after which rapid feed can be continued until the wing is through the bore and swings free. Rotation and feed direction are then reversed to spotface, chamfer or deburr the back of the bore. When machining is completed, forward feed is resumed until the wing is just free of the bore and resuming anti clockwise rotation causes it to fold back into the spindle recess so the tool can be withdrawn from the bore. On small tools, the HSS wings can become magnetised during operation and should be demagnetised, if necessary, to ensure smooth operation. Use of coolant or lubrication oil is also recommended a few drops of thin non sticky oil in the case of cast iron. Large tools run at low speed and when operating horizontally, the centrifugal force acting on the wing is not sufficient to hold it in correct working position. For tools with diameters greater than 30mm, therefore the wing has a guide tang which solves this problem. In addition to its standard range of tools for spotfacing, chamfering, counter boring and deburring. Erix offers semi-standard and standard and speciality spindle and wings for a variety of applications including bores up to 200mm diameter. Tools can also be made to customers specifications and all spindle for bore diameters of 10mm and above whether cylindrical or morse taper can be supplied for through coolant supply.
